Compress PDF

Reduce the size of a PDF so it fits an email or an upload limit. The pictures inside are re-encoded and resized; text and vector artwork are left untouched. Runs entirely on your device.

First run downloads the conversion engine (about 4 MB) once, then it is cached.

Advanced options
Compression

Good on screen and in print. Only the pictures inside the PDF are re-encoded; text stays sharp and selectable, so a PDF that is all text will barely shrink.

What each tool does

Images → PDF turns JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP and other pictures into one PDF. PDF → Images renders every page as a JPG or PNG. Merge joins PDFs in order, Split extracts pages or ranges, Compress re-encodes the pictures inside a PDF to shrink it, PDF → Text pulls out the text layer, and PDF → Word rebuilds it as an editable .docx with the pictures in place.

Why local processing matters for PDFs

PDFs often contain contracts, bank statements, IDs and medical records. fileio builds and restructures PDFs with a Rust engine compiled to WebAssembly and renders pages with pdf.js, entirely inside your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is inside. A scanned document or a PDF full of photos often drops by 60–90%. A PDF that is only text and vector graphics is already compact, so it will barely change – fileio gives you the original file back rather than a larger one.

Will the text get blurry?

No. Only the raster images embedded in the pages are re-encoded. Text stays as text, so it remains sharp at any zoom and can still be selected and searched.

Which level should I pick?

Balanced suits almost everything. Pick Light when the PDF will be printed, and Strong when you only need it to open on screen or to get under an upload limit. Greyscale shrinks scanned pages a lot more, but the colour cannot be brought back.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The PDF is rewritten by a Rust/WebAssembly engine inside your browser tab, so contracts, statements and scans never leave your device.
